Beautifully composed and produced, this book offers some fine scholarship but never gets too fond of itself or too "Lit Crit"; very little jargon bandied by: The Book of Laughter and Forgetting Summary Part I: Lost Letters.

Kundera opens with a story about Gottwald, the first Communist president of Czechoslovakia, and Clementis, later an enemy of the state.
